About
Leonard Patton is a dynamic vocalist whose sound defies easy classification, blending jazz, gospel, soul, pop, and theater into a deeply expressive musical voice. Raised in a gospel household and writing songs by age eleven, Patton absorbed music early and broadly—an openness that continues to shape his artistry today.

Rooted in the tradition of great gospel-bred singers like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, and Lou Rawls, Patton brings an instrumental approach to singing that reflects his extensive jazz training. Known for his warm tenor, fluid improvisation, and horn-like scat phrasing, he is a singer who listens deeply and interacts fully with the band. His performances are marked by musical intelligence, rhythmic precision, and a joyful, commanding stage presence.

A professional performer for over two decades, Patton studied musical theatre and classical music before earning his master’s degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. He is a passionate advocate for singers as musicians—reading music, understanding harmony and form, and communicating fluently with fellow players. This commitment has made him a sought-after collaborator among top jazz artists.

In addition to his work as a jazz vocalist, Patton is an accomplished stage performer, with notable appearances at North Coast Repertory Theatre and Lamb’s Players Theatre. Whether on a concert stage or in a theatrical production, he brings storytelling, warmth, and authenticity to every performance.
Above all, Leonard Patton remains a lifelong student of music—driven by collaboration, creative freedom, and a love for exploring sound in all its forms.

Music
Patton has released two acclaimed recordings: Love, Life, and Song (2008), nominated for Best Jazz Album at the San Diego Music Awards, and Expressions, a duo album with Grammy-nominated pianist Geoffrey Keezer praised for its adventurous interplay and emotional range. His repertoire spans jazz standards, original compositions, and reimagined pop and rock songs, always approached with curiosity and respect for the music.
